To Republican leadership:
Embracing lies about the 2020 election. Deflecting blame about what happened to our Capitol on January 6. Ignoring Republican members of Congress spreading anti-vaccine conspiracy theories that put Americans at risk. All these actions should be unacceptable—but right now, that is exactly what you’re doing.
The Republican party used to stand for principles, but it seems that you’re more interested in winning approval from an audience of one: former president Trump. It’s hard for me to recognize the party I used to be a proud member of. We need leaders who reject lies and conspiracy theories about the election, January 6, and COVID-19.
The party is at risk of losing voters like me forever if it can’t say things that used to be a given. Mobs are bad. Conspiracy theories chip away at our shared understanding of truth. And lies about our elections weaken the one thing that unites all Americans: our democratic system.
We absolutely must return to being the party that stands for the truth and the Constitution above all else.
